Timeline & Milestones
The transition to Bedford City School District’s new elementary school configuration is a multi-phase process that includes construction, operational planning, staff preparation, student and family support, and community communication.
The timeline below provides a high-level look at what the District and Elementary School Transition Committee will be working through between August 2026 and the opening of the new schools for the 2027–2028 school year. As decisions are finalized, additional information will be shared throughout this website.
Phase 1 | August–September 2026
Engagement, Communication & Early Planning
The transition process begins with communication, stakeholder engagement and early planning. Work during this period includes developing communication resources, organizing stakeholder questions, considering student and community engagement opportunities, and beginning conversations about how school communities will successfully come together.
Perkins Construction (Phase 1): Building exteriors progress toward completion while interior construction, MEP rough-in, drywall and wall systems continue.
Phase 2 | October–November 2026
Preparing Schools, Staff & Communities
Planning begins moving from broad questions toward preparation. The District will consider school culture and belonging measures and development, as well as staff collaboration, enrollment and growth intiatives for the Perkins Primary School.
Heskett building improvements and other operational needs associated with bringing the intermediate school communities together also commence during Phase 2.
Perkins Construction (Phase 2) : Windows and storefront work reach completion as the buildings become dried-in. Interior drywall, MEP work and painting progress.
Phase 3 | December 2026–January 2027
Transportation, Technology & Resources
Attention turns toward systems that will support everyday school operations. Technology relocation, transportation and traffic, classroom furniture and resources, organizational transitions and contingency planning are among the areas being addressed.
Perkins Construction (Phase3): Interior painting, ceiling grids and lighting advance, along with MEP finishes and ceiling work.
Phase 4 | February–March 2027
Procedures & Transition Planning
This is a major planning period. Transportation routes, arrival and dismissal, safety and security, student transition activities, summer school, moving procedures, staffing considerations, leadership and daily school operations all move toward greater detail.
Perkins Construction (Phase 4): Casework, flooring, doors and hardware advance, with a continued flooring push in Area B.
Phase 5 | April–May 2027
Assignments & Move Preparation
Plans become increasingly specific for students, staff and individual buildings. Work includes classroom and staff assignments, transportation planning, packing procedures, building preparation and communicating information families and employees will need before the transition.
Perkins Construction (Phase 5): Interior finishes and inspections progress while gym finishes advance in Area B.
Phase 6 | June–July 2027
Move-In & Opening Readiness
The final phase focuses on moving, building readiness and preparing families, staff and the community for opening. Walk-throughs, Open House planning, materials and equipment disposition and final readiness activities will help bring the transition from planning to implementation.
Perkins Construction (Phase 6): Area B enters its final push, punch-list work is addressed and moving activities begin.
